Plagiarism

It has been brought to my attention that large parts of When Doves Cry has been copied by someone on fanfiction.com. Right now I have sent both the girl and the website and nothing has been done. She doesn't have a valid email account or private messaging and I have given her a week to take everything down/fix her shit but she hasn't acknowledged anything and I haven't heard from fanfiction.com.

She pretty much copied Adrian's thoughts and swapped out names and some objects and as a result, not only is her main character mine, his friends/girlfriend are copies of Bryce, his sister, Alyssa and his parents are Adrian's. She does have some original work up (I think, unless she copied her main character from someone else's work).

Does anyone know how long it takes for them to get back to you on plagiarist complaints and do you know what I can do, aside from putting her on blast to get it taken down?

I found out Sunday and told her she had a week to take it down [I honestly don't know why I gave her any leeway.] and it's now Wednesday and nothing. Also, how childish would it be for me to put her on blast if she doesn't have it down by Sunday?

  1. Just had the same problem yesterday. At first I wanted to confront the heifer (excuse my language)for taking my ideas. But then I realized what would that do, nothing, instead start a problem. So I remade my hole presentation over, it looked better then the one originally made. Well in your case, I'm not telling you to write your story over because it takes time && energy to do. This chick must know what she done, if she has a conscience of some sort; && she hiding too if you can't reach her. Try reaching out to fanfiction again, if that don't work, a girl gotta do what a girl gotta do. But just try to be patient, only time could tell.

  2. Never had the issue myself but Izzy is right, contact fanfiction again. Also a few other writers have had other members complain too and that should help get it down.

They say it's a form of flattery but why can't they just send a message saying they like your work instead of passing it off as their own?

  3. Yeah, I'll definitely have to message them again although I might email their copyright department instead. The only thing is that the set up for that one is a bit confusing since it's set up for published authors.

I'm also going to look into some of those anit-plagiarism sites that popped up last year when a bunch of authors pulled out of fictionpress and see if they have any advice.

And if by Sunday it;s not down then I'll probably go the route of getting other members to complain as well.

@Izzy, I have no problem calling her out on it since I think she should know I know, I will be rewriting/editing that story since it needs a major clean up but I don't think I should just let her get away with using my words and passing it off as her own.

    @Stretch19
Imitation is a form of flattery, and if she was attempting to write in my voice//the style I used for WDC I might have gotten irritated but let it slide since she was at least trying to be original and everyone starts somewhere, lifting my work word for word, especially when it took me so long to get Adrian's voice the way I want it? That's not flattering at all, just disrespectful and she's old enough to know better.

Thanks for responding, you guys :)

  4. Would you let someone steal your car? No. This is the same thing. You own your characters, their dialogue, their feelings, and etc. Fight this!! You are a good writer and one day you might want to publish. Clear this up now and when you get published you won't have to worry about this same person stealing your work again.Get this maggot!

Plus, I am sick of the plagiarism, cheating, stealing, and remaking of classics because people are not smart enough, creative enough, bold enough to think on their own and create something new(real upset about the Dirty Dancing reboot, can't get over it). Go after this thief and then move your work to somewhere it is protected, but please let us know where.

    Good Luck

  6. I have no intention of letting it slide, it's just hard to make sure something happens since fanfiction doesn't appear to be doing anything and she's being immature and not responding.

I'm going to join the fpwatchers site and post the link to her story on there, I'll probably also make a comment about it on fictionpress or make a new chapter for When Doves Cry to see if she will take it down if there's a large enough uproar.

I'm also going to do a 'compare and contrast' on here so you can see the bits she's taken from my story since she took parts from Adrian's POV and the actual storyline is different.

It might just take a while since I'm moving back in to my house on campus tomorrow and then school starts back but it will happen.

And I'm not going to watch the Dirty Dancing reboot, I was irritated when I thought they were remaking it and putting it in modern times, but I just got pissed when I realised they're leaving it exactly the same but giving it a newer cast. I just don't see why they have to mess with a classic. That's like remaking Pretty in Pink or Dirty Dancing. Just leave it alone.

  7. WOW i can't believe that someone took your work. The things that some people do isjust really crazy and just plain WRONG! Sequined Pajamas is right and Jammi keep at it and i hope this person takes it down and learns a lesson that they shouldn't steal other people's hard work! I really hope things work out....JUst WOW the nerve!
